Do you race for fun, health or competition? Why?
I only race for fun. I was never very good in sports but I found out that endurance is something I can do and as I love swimming, cycling and running I came to really love triathlon. Losing a lot of weight and being more balanced and healthy came along with it. Those were quite unexpected side-effects but I must admit I really like them, too.
What personal goals have you reached already?
I had a few personal goals for my life. Now I find that once I started completing them and ticking them off my list more and more goals arise. So I am really excited and open to what else might happen. In terms of sports it was finishing the NYC marathon (even though due to an injury I could only walk) and everyday when I see the medal on my wall I feel like I can do anything. A big personal goal I reached was actually writing a book and having it published.
What personal goals do you have for the future?
I want to continue doing triathlon and see if I can also try longer distances. I will need to see if I can do it in terms of injury (my knees are my weak point) but the last years taught me: Always give things a try. I know I would always regret it if did not try. So here we go! In terms of personal goals I would like some development in my job. I am a teacher and counselor for other teachers now. I would like to try and become deputy head of a school.
What was your first race?
My first race was a local 5k run called Frechener Frühlingslauf which I did years ago with a colleague.
How long have you been interested in triathlon/running/fitness?
I did a running class after years of not running in 2012. From 5k I went to 10k, then to half marathon and then I thought I needed a coach because my goal of running a marathon (something I never really considered to do) suddenly seemed possible.
Do you enjoy training or competing most?
I really like both.
What is your favorite part of training?
I love being outside and seeing nature. Training is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. I love spending time with myself – I very seldom train with others because it is very stressful for me if they are faster. I also like being active and taking a shower and protein drinks after training. And I must admit I really love it when friends tell me I am looking great 🙂
What drives you to compete?
I love medals. I have a medal board in my bedroom and I love to look at all the medals I got.
Why did you choose Team Malone?
I know Katie from my teenage years. She was an exchange student in my village. We kept in touch over the years and when I wanted to run the marathon I asked her to help me. Because I love being coached by her and because she is a wonderful friend I never even considered hiring someone else.
What race or races are on your bucket list?
Hmmm… I try never to think never further than one season. I would love to do the ‘Strandräuber’ 70.3 race this year. It is on a small island in the north of Germany. Who knows if I can ever finish it – but if I do… there are things which would be great to try: the Great Wall Marathon in China (however a 10k race there would probably enough for me), the Polar Night Half Marathon in Tromsö Norway – and who knows what might wait for me in triathlon. But one thing after another. Now I am looking forward to starting a new season of training.
