Do you race for fun, health or competition? Why?
I train and race mainly for health and fun. I enjoy being outside, being healthy and challenging myself personally.
What personal goals have you reached already?
Personal goals for me are about continual fitness. While certainly the half ironman was a great goal that I reached the steadiness of training is really my goal. That is greatly helped by having a coach to motivate you and being part of team.
What personal goals do you have for the future?
Continual fitness is always a goal but doing a full ironman is now certainly a goal.
What was your first race?
Tryon Half Marathon was my first race. I had just started running again to get back in shape and someone suggested I enter it. This was before I was part of Team Malone. My first Triathlon was the Clemson Sprint. I had no idea what I was doing but thanks to Katie I was well prepared not just physically but also mentally in that she had coached me through every step including the transitions. I know that’s the reason why in my first Triathlon i placed 3rd in my age group.
How long have you been interested in triathlon/running/fitness?
I’ve exercised all my life. Learned to swim when I was 3 and growing up in Miami, FL swam a lot. I biked a lot as well as played tennis. I was late to Triathlon/running and didn’t start until I was in my mid fifties.
Do you enjoy training or competing most?
I enjoy the training the most. I like racing but it’s not what gets me out of bed.
What is your favorite part of training?
The journey. Looking back at where I was a few years ago and where I am now. Challenging myself to go a little faster or a little farther.
What drives you to compete?
To be totally honest nothing drives me to compete. I’d train whether I’m was competing or not.
Why did you choose Team Malone?
When I started getting serious about training and competing I knew I needed a Coach. As an older athlete I knew it was important to have someone guide me through this. I had met Katie a few times and friends recommended her. When we met for our initial evaluation I liked that she listened to what I was saying and what I wanted from it. The four and a half years I’ve now trained under Katie has only reenforced that I made the right choice.
What race or races are on your bucket list?
Boston Marathon was always on my bucket list but for various injuries was never able to qualify. I’ve had to give up this bucket list and pivot to triathlons but I don’t regret that. As I told Katie at that first evaluation more than regretting not qualifying would be to not have given it my all in trying to do so. We gave it our all and I have no regrets about it. So now it’s on to a full ironman!
