Do you race for fun, health or competition? Why?

I started running for health reasons, as I was 208 pounds and woefully out of shape. But now do triathlon for fun and competition. The competition is more with myself to get better at all 3 phases. The people and camaraderie of the triathlon community is what makes it so fun.

What personal goals have you reached already?

I lost 30+ pounds! I have become a better biker, and am a much better swimmer now.

What personal goals do you have for the future?

The year of my 60th birthday, I want to do a race at every distance I have ever done in the past. So, as of now, I will have to do a 5k, 10k, 15k, Half Marathon, a Sprint Tri, Sprinternational Tri, Olympic Tri, Half Ironman, and a Full Ironman. I have not decided on a charity yet, but will couple my journey with raising money for that charity.

What was your first race?

My first running race was the Peachtree Road Race 10k with my father when I was 16, but my first tri was the 2014 Clemson Sprint. It will be a Sprinternational this year, but I have never missed the Clemson race since.

How long have you been interested in triathlon/running/fitness?

As mentioned, I was woefully out of shape, the year I was going to turn 50. I started eating healthier and running, although I could not even run 1/4 mile when I first started. After running the ATL Half Marathon, I was looking for something other than just running and a friend said he had been doing triathlons for a year and I should try. After my first, I was hooked.

Do you enjoy training or competing most?

I generally train alone, so I enjoy competitions and the people more.

What is your favorite part of training?

At first, I was a better runner, but enjoyed the bike the most. Now that I have improved my swimming, I probably enjoy it the most.

What drives you to compete?

Knowing that I can always get better.

Why did you choose Team Malone?

I met Katie at my first triathlon and she came highly recommended. I knew I needed direction as I thought I was going to pass out during that Clemson triathlon.

What race or races are on your bucket list?

There are several, but IM 70.3 Puerto Rico comes to mind first.
