Open Water Swims 2019

What you can expect at an open water swim: we do a warm-up and we do an actual open water swim workout. I also give athletes feedback on technique while we are out there. Our open water swims are like no other and will make you stronger and more confident in open water!

A lot of people have approached me about swimming at the lake this year. I have always generously shared my place with the triathlon community. Please understand that I am sharing this with you and read the rules below so that we do not upset the neighbors as this is a private lake.

My place at the lake is ONLY OPEN during these times. At no time, under any circumstances, are you allowed to use this boathouse otherwise.

Open water swims will start Monday April 22nd at 6:30 PM sharp…in the water! That means you need to arrive a little earlier to allow time to squeeze into your wetsuits.

2004 West Lakeshore Drive

Landrum, SC 29356

The water is already 70! While I still recommend a wetsuit, you are free to swim without one at this temperature.

Please make sure to bring warm/dry clothes to change into immediately afterwards. *We have a changing area but NO RESTROOMS! There are restrooms at the Hot Spot or El Sureno on your way to the lake off of Hwy 176.

DO NOT USE THE WOODEN STAIRS TO ENTER THE WATER!!! These are very slippery and they are meant for DOGS ONLY!

Changing: Women will be changing UPSTAIRS & Men Downstairs – this will help us all get changed into warm clothes faster! Please do NOT wear wetsuits into the boathouse upstairs!

Parking: PLEASE Park off the side of the road. We ARE allowed to use the gravel parking lot past my house if it is available (2002 West Lakeshore Dr.). Please DO NOT park in the paved driveway across the street. We don’t have permission to use that area. Be respectful of where you park! Thank you!

As always we will have kayak support.  If you know someone who would like to be kayak support please let me know – as we get larger groups in the warmer months I need help. They must be able to paddle well enough to keep up with swimmers!

*Friends who are not MC athletes must be USAT members.

Due to changes in coverage we are now considered a “club” and must change procedures in order to maintain insurance.

*ALL SWIMMERS MUST SIGN A LIABILITY WAIVER

We always get dinner at El Sureno (before the entrance to the lake).

***In case of bad weather: I will post on FACEBOOK 90 min before the start of the swim what the plan is. I can only get text messages when I am at the lake and sometimes even that does not work up there!

DATES: *These are the planned dates. They might have to shift due to weather or other unexpected life challenges, all of which will be published on Facebook and Malonecoaching.com

  1. How long does the workout last? I will come from Spartanburg, have to be up early the next morning so will miss dinner with the group (hopefully, next time).

      The workout is 1 hour:

*Where I have 500/700 the 500 is for those looking to swim less and the 700 is for those who will be doing the longer swim.

      200 WU
200 Snorkel – focus on getting hips HIGH in the water – downhill swimming!
500/700 (depending on ability) Steady effort – working on breathing timing. Slower swimmers can use FINS.
500/700 – partner swim, practice drafting and working together. (Snorkel & Fins optional)
      200/500 -Partner dragging!
200/500 – easy swim working on body position – press chest down. CD effort

      OPTIONS -1600 to 2800

Tonight is a 1 hour swim consisting of body position work & pulling & partner swimming come ready for a great exciting workout! Bring fins & snorkel if you have them!
