How long have you been interested in racing?
I started the sport of triathlon in 2012 due to the beginning of joint issues from to years of running. I decided to switch things up and try a little swimming and biking as well.
What was your first race?
My very first triathlon was an indoor race at the Life Center in Greenville. Then, a few months later I competed in the You Go Girl triathlon. After this race, I decided that I really enjoyed training and racing. I did the Greenville Tri for the next couple of years just to keep my feet wet in the sport. In 2016 I decided to try out the half distance. I knew that I needed some guidance in order to get ready for such a big challenge. This is where Katie came into play!
I began training with her in February of 2016 and my race was May of 2016. She had her work cut out for her (and so did I!). During those few short months I learned so much about the sport and also about myself. Katie helped me to realize my potential through her detailed training program and feedback.
What drives you to compete?
Today, I continue to race because training and competing in triathlon is something that I can do for myself. I am a wife, mom to three teens, and also a RN. Because I spend time taking care of myself by eating properly, getting adequate sleep, and being disciplined with my workouts I am able to take better care of my family and others (and also am a better athlete).
What personal goals have you reached already?
In 2017, I decided it was time for me to take my passion about the sport to the next level. For many years I had watched the IM World Championship in Kona on television. Each time I watched it I had chills as I watched and heard the athletes stories and what they had overcome to make it to Kona. I decided on IM Chattanooga and dedicated the year to preparing for it. Even though the the training wasn’t perfect due to an injury early in the year, Katie helped me to adapt and ultimately reach my goal.
What personal goals do you have for the future?
As for my goals for the future, I’d love to compete in another IM and already have chosen the one I’d like to do. It’s just a matter of timing in order to make it happen!
What race or races are on your bucket list?
I’m not much of a dreamer, but if I had to choose some races for my bucket list I’d throw in an X-terra race, the IM that I mentioned above, an international IM, and Assault on Mount Mitchell. I’d also love to go to USAT Nationals one year just to have that experience.
Why did you choose Team Malone?
I chose Katie Malone initially as my coach because she came so highly recommended by a close friend. Soon after I met her, I knew we would work well together. Katie is very detailed in the workouts that she gives me in order to prepare for upcoming races. Also, Katie looks closely at my workouts once I’ve completed them and offers feedback on what I need to do in order to keep moving towards my goals. Most importantly, Katie is a friend. She is available if I am struggling with self-doubt while training/racing and also there to celebrate my achievements.
