Do you race for fun, health or competition? Why?
In 2002 I realized sitting behind my desk was creating quite the waistline. I saw an ad for team in training Disney Triathlon (Olympic Distance) and decided to give it a shot. I finished that in 2:56:04 (78/120 in ag). I enjoyed the people I met at the races and over the years I have become competitive in my age group. Now I do it for the competition and to keep my waistline in check.
What personal goals have you reached already?
To become competitive in my age group.
What personal goals do you have for the future?
I would like to get my run to be in the top 30% of the field rather than the bottom half.
What was your first race?
2002 Olympic Distance Disney Triathlon
How long have you been interested in triathlon/running/fitness?
2002 started triathlon, but I swam competitively in high school and raced bicycles for a few years in the early 90’s.
Do you enjoy training or competing most?
Competing, without a doubt
What is your favorite part of training?
There’s a favorite part? Oh wait, its being done for the day :-).
What drives you to compete?
My nature
Why did you choose Team Malone?
Several years ago at the Greenwood race Katie said something to me on the run. She did not know me and still had something kind to say when she thought I was suffering through the run. I knew who she was since some folks I knew trained with her. I talked to her after the race to see about getting running help. We met a couple of times for run coaching. I had a different triathlon coach at the time. A year or so later I tried to join her team but for several different reasons she didn’t have room for me on her team. Finally last year I got on the team. With her training plan I ended up setting PR’s at every race. Not a bad year!
What race or races are on your bucket list?
Not really sure, we’ll see what comes along.
