Do you race for fun, health or competition? Why?

Starting a new sport was a challenge. I started doing triathlon when I turned 55 because I was overweight and needed more focus in my life.  I have been an athlete my whole life originally I started as a professional tennis coach until I became a school teacher at the age of 32.

What personal goals have you reached already?

I have been able to PR on a few races.

What personal goals do you have for the future?

I hope to move up to Olympic distance.

What was your first race?

Columbia Downtown Triathlon

How long have you been interested in triathlon/running/fitness?

I’ve been doing sprint triathlon for 3 seasons but I am having knee replacement surgery in March and will then switch to Aquabike (Swim/Bike) when I return to training.

Do you enjoy training or competing most?

It was challenging to figure out a sport that I was totally clueless with. I was hooked from the first day and hungry to learn everything I could about triathlon. I have stepped out of my comfort zone many times and have meet so many helpful, motivating people.

What is your favorite part of training?

Those days when I don’t want to train but get out there and it crush it.

What drives you to compete?

I have rediscovered parts of me that I’ve missed. Triathlons made me face several demons that I have hidden well and caused me great regret for years. I’m a better person, teacher, friend and partner from the triathlon experience.  That is why I’m fighting hard to keep triathlon a part of my life even after going through knee replacement surgery.

Why did you choose Team Malone?

Several friends highly recommended Katie.  When I started doing the lakes swims I could see that Katie was the right fit for me. Katie’s credentials speak volumes but beyond that is her commitment to helping each athlete reach their potential. Katie not only delivers challenging TP (Training Peaks) workouts but she is available when needed and puts together fun and engaging group workouts. I also love the team aspect of Team Malone, lots of fun and encouraging team members!

What race or races are on your bucket list?

The coolest, most challenging olympic Aquabike I can find!
