Youth Run Coaching Summer 2025 & Youth Triathlon Opportunities
Keene shows off good form during the run leg of Andy’s Race (Sprint Triathlon)
As more and more parents approach me about working with their children I am seeing a need to work with young runners on proper form as well as mental training. My thought behind this is that if we teach important foundational skills from the beginning these young runners will cut the learning curve in half and be able to run to their potential much sooner than their peers.
I am planning to start small and keep the program to no more than 10 kids who really want to work hard and get better over the summer.
To start with we will meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at Milliken in Spartanburg in front of the pond out front (the one you can see from 585). Practice will be from 7:30-8:30 PM. I am doing this later in the day to allow it to cool off a little bit and allow those of you who need to drive there to be able to get home from work etc.
Session 1 will be from May 27th - June 26th (5 weeks - 10 sessions) - $160
Session 2 will be from July 8-July 24th (3 weeks - 6 sessions) - $96

*There will be track meets at McCracken Middle School on Wednesday evenings that might be fun to attend as a group as well - Maybe not every week but maybe every other week. There is a small fee to race these. TBD.
The Fabulous 4th of July Bike Tour 2024
Practices will be structured like this:
1. 10 min WU - will start promptly at 7:05 and be run in 2 small groups
2. Learn warm-up routine for races
3. Drill time and form work - this will be done each practice. We will do drills as well as tire pulling, lunges, squats, planks, partner pulling with harness, small hurdles. Each week these will vary depending on what we are working on.
4. Run workout - easy running with shorter interval work on Tuesdays and hills on Thursday.
5. Relays for fun
6. Short cool down
Total distance 2.5-4 miles depending on workout.
Ages - 10-16
As you can see there will be a lot of work to get done which is why it is important that you have a child dedicated to improving and that they come with an open mind and desire to work.
All running will be done on soft surfaces at Milliken. I will supervise from a bike to allow me to move between the groups.
While this program is targeted at youth runners I am also looking for some of the kids to participate in a youth triathlon. I have loaner bikes and will have sessions to teach the kids to swim if needed.

Local(ish) races:
July 26th - James Island Youth Triathlon - 100/200 swim, 3/6 mile bike and 1/2 mile run depending on age. Register soon because this will fill up! This course is closed to traffic and very safe.
July 27th - Charleston (James Island) Adult Triathlon (Sprint distance 800 swim, 12 miles bike, 3.1 run) -older kids can do this one too. This is on the road and NOT what I would consider super safe for younger kids.
August 1-3rd Youth Triathlon Nationals - West Chester, OH - I will be attending with some of the youth from the Charleston group called Palmetto Tribe. No qualification necessary.
August 23rd - Summerville Youth Tri
September 1st - Strong Kids Tri - Simpsonville YMCA
There are also some adult races put on by Set-up Events called the SC Triathlon Series - 1st timers race FREE! Some races like the Swamp Rabbit Tri on July 12th or Andy's Race on August 3rd are close to home and great first races!
